Settings filename: 5001_8001_1002_1001_1005_1bw.stn COM-5001 LAN 10-baseT Interface -> COM-8001 Arbitrary Waveform Generator -> COM-1002 BPSK/QPSK/OQPSK digital modulator -> COM-1001 BPSK/QPSK/OQPSK digital demodulator -> COM-1005 Bit Error Rate Measurement Objective: Demonstrate the ability to load a large (1MB) binary file, play it back as a serial (1-bit wide) data stream, use the data stream as input to the QPSK modem, and recover the data stream error-free at the demodulator. The serial format DOES NOT guarantee that two successive (I/Q) bits are transmitted within the same QPSK symbol. However, the BER measurement module corrects for this uncertainty and any 90 deg phase ambiguity. The QPSK modulator sets the data rate at 19.8 Mbit/s. Data is pulled out of the arbitrary waveform generator at the bit rate set by the QPSK modulator, using a flow-control mechanism. Note: a similar settings is available for 2-bit wide sample. (5001_8001_1002_1001_1005_2bw.stn) The ComBlock assembly IP address is configured to be 172.16.1.128 If this IP address does not match your network, edit the 5001_8001_1002_1001_1005_1bw.stn file (change the COM-5001 registers 0-3 [IP address] and 4-7 [IP mask] and 8-11 [IP Gateway]. Note: recycle power after changing the IP address. Step 1: Check the LAN connection. Power up the ComBlock assembly. Wait 10 seconds for all FPGAs to configure. Connect the COM-5001 to a LAN hub or PC (the latter requires a crossover cable). From the ComBlock Control Center, select the Communication Setup (leftmost icon). Select the LAN connection. Perform a Ping to check that the LAN connection is OK. Step 2: Configure the ComBlock assembly. From the ComBlock Control Center, enumerate the ComBlock assembly (2nd icon from the left). 5 units are found. Then import the 5001_8001_1002_1001_1005_1bw.stn settings file from the File | Import menu. The assembly is now configured. If the LAN address was changed, one must recycle power (wait 10 seconds and enumerate again). Step 3: Upload binary file. Open the window Function | Pattern generator. Upload the binary file "PRBS11_1bw.bin" (in the ComBlock CD Basic Settings folder, or ComBlock web site). The file contains 1,048,064 bytes (8,384,512 bits). Do the entire upload, starting at address 0. Select Action = Start Upload. Then Apply. The menu should show a progress bar, then indicate successful upload of 1,048,064 bytes. Step 4: Playback binary file Select Action = Start continuous download. The download window length is 1,048,064 bytes. The output flow is "Data pulled" as the QPSK modulator manages the flow control. Step 5: using an oscilloscope, verify that the BER measurement module is (a) synchronized (TP1 is high) (b) receives a periodic (206.8us) start of PRBS11 sequence (TP4) (c) detects no bit errors (TP3 is always low).
