Settings filename: 5002_8001_1005.stn COM-5002 LAN / TCP-IP Network Interface -> COM-8001 Arbitrary Waveform Generator -> COM-1005 Bit Error Rate Measurement Objective: Demonstrate the ability to load a large (200MB) binary file, play it back as a serial (1-bit wide) data stream and verify the error-free transfers from the host PC to the output bit stream. Auto-negotiation is set to allow connection to either a 10Base-T or 100Base-Tx LAN. The ComBlock assembly IP address is configured to be 172.16.1.128 If this IP address does not match your network, edit the 5002_8001_1005.stn file (change the COM-5002 registers 0-3 [IP address]). Step 1: Connect the COM-5002 to a LAN hub or PC (the latter requires a crossover cable). Connect a serial cable between the host computer and the COM-5002. Step 2: Configure the ComBlock assembly. From the ComBlock Control Center, enumerate the ComBlock assembly (2nd icon from the left). 3 ComBlocks are found. Then import the 5002_8001_1005.stn settings file from the File | Import menu. The assembly is now configured. Recycle power for the 10baseT/100baseTx autodetection configuration to become effective. Step 3: Check the LAN connection. After powering up the ComBlock assembly Wait 10 seconds for all FPGAs to configure. From the ComBlock Control Center, select the Communication Setup (leftmost icon). Select the LAN connection. Perform a Ping at address 172.16.1.128 (or the user-defined address) to check that the LAN connection is OK. All 4 pings should be successful. Step 4: Upload binary file. Open the window Function | Pattern generator. Upload the binary file "PRBS11_1bw_200MB.bin" (in the ComBlock CD Basic Settings folder). The file contains 209,612,800 bytes (1.66Gbits). Do the entire upload, starting at address 0. Select Action = Start Upload. Then Apply. The menu should show a progress bar, then indicate successful upload of 209,612,800 bytes. On a 100-baseTx LAN, the upload speed is typically between 67 and 90 seconds depending on the host computer. Step 5: Playback binary file Select Action = Start continuous download. The download window length is 209,612,800 bytes. The output flow is "Data pushed", speed is 20Mbit/s. Step 6: using an oscilloscope, verify that the BER measurement module is (a) synchronized (TP1 is high) (b) receives a periodic (1.02 ms) start of PRBS11 sequence (TP4) (c) detects no bit errors (TP3 is always low).
